We see a woman drinking a coffee and looking around. She is wearing glasses and has her hair pulled back. Perhaps she is getting ready to approach a group, but will she read the room and tune in with the energy of those around her?

Energetic Awareness and How to Read a Room

Have you ever been in a group setting, and everyone is chatting, and the atmosphere is light – and then enter that one person who just can’t read a room? This person stands out like a sore thumb, energetically. They are up when everyone else is down, down when everyone else is up. Bringing up a conversation that ended, not that long ago – with the same content.

Typically this person makes the air a little awkward, or otherwise uncomfortable for everyone around. It’s almost as if you want to get their attention and say something like “Hey! Look around!” because nothing they’re doing or saying is in alignment with the rest of the group.

Now, for clarity – this post is more about understanding the crowd – rather than fitting in or standing out. When we are around others, we want to have respect for ourselves and them during the time we are together. This includes having awareness, being present and meeting people where they are – rather than approaching a reflection of your assumptions of them.

The Language of Awareness

Notice next time you are around someone who doesn’t seem to be reading the room. Take a look at the tone of their voice, and the timing of their delivery. Feel their energy, and notice how their energy feels to you. Everything about how they are showing up in that moment carries just as much weight as the words they are saying.

Being emotionally unaware can lead to miscommunication. However, when you tune in to the energy of others, you can deliver your message so that it lands effectively.

That’s a part of meeting people where they are.

For example, if someone is going through a tough time, perhaps a grief stage at the loss of a loved one – it would be entirely inappropriate to rush into the room telling jokes in a high energy state. This isn’t being manipulative or performative, it’s presenting yourself in a way that is appropriate for the environment you’re in.

Having this ability affects both your external and internal world. Energetic awareness improves your communication skills; how you articulate yourself at work, in your relationships and in your social life. These skills also help you reduce conflict, enhance your personal growth and gain clarity.

What It Really Means to “Read a Room”

Reading the room, or knowing your audience, checking the vibe, tuning in with who is in front of you – is the ability to sense context. It’s being aware of who you are talking to, what matters to them and being able to gauge the emotional temperature of the moment. When you understand these things about who is in front of you, you can really connect with them. Understanding your audience means knowing what they want, so that you can tailor your message in a way they can understand, and relate it to things that they can relate to.

Take a moment and remember the last time you felt like someone was “talking at” you.

What did that feel like?

Were you really present with them, paying full attention?

Did your eyes glaze over?

Did you think about other things – like when they might ever be done?

This feeling is the difference between someone who knows their audience and someone who does not. It’s having the understanding to talk to someone and relate to them in a way that they are able to receive. Of course, maintaining our boundaries is a given. It’s the idea that if we want to relate to others, we have to care – at least to some degree – about what they care about.

How to Sense the Energy of the Moment

There are a lot of ways to tune in with your environment and check the energy of the room.

We can look for things like body language; how are those around you standing? Are they relaxed; leaning back in their chair? Are they standing straight up; arms folded? Or, are they leaning in; toes pointed towards you and a relaxed smile on their face?

Maybe they keep checking their watch, or ignoring phone calls. All of these things can tell you a little bit about how they are feeling and where their interest lies.

You can take a moment to feel the energy of the room. Notice if folks are laughing or if they’re tense. Look and see if the space is open and curious, or if it’s uncertain, or guarded.

A lot can be learned from what people say, of course, but also notice the terminology someone uses. Pay attention to what they say, and pay even closer attention to what they don’t.

When we have this information, we can tune in to ourselves to see how we are feeling as well. We can find our center, and then should we decide we want to move forward with the interaction, we can adjust our tone, pace and openness to match the moment.

Again, this isn’t a matter of  manipulation, it’s a matter of alignment.

Benefits of Energetic Awareness

When you know your audience and respond accordingly, you open the door for growth and learning both socially and professionally. You can benefit on a personal level as well, both emotionally and mentally. Some of the benefits you might notice are listed below:

Builds Trust and Rapport

Speaking to someone in the way they need to be spoken to, understanding their wants and needs and delivering your message in a way that they can best receive it is a service. If you’re open and in tune with the people around you, you pave the way for trust and rapport. Folks enjoy your company and they enjoy talking to you because they feel seen and understood by you.

Resolves Misunderstandings

Knowing how the person across from you receives messages helps to avoid or resolve misunderstandings. It’s seeing where someone is coming from, and the effort to also understand their why.

Creates More Meaningful Interactions

Having that genuine intention and curiosity to know someone, learn more about them and use that information to improve upon your relationship to that person allows for more meaningful, aligned conversations and interactions.

Encourages Self-Regulation

On an inward level, because your interactions feel more aligned, you might not feel the need to overexplain as much, you might feel more comfortable and less defensive, you could even avoid things like emotional burnout.

Respect For Your Own Energy

Knowing your audience and showing up accordingly also comes with the benefit of making the most informed choice with regards to where you place your energy and attention. When you know the audience you have may not be the one you want, you can adjust your expectations accordingly.

For Moments When You’re Not Socially Aware (and How to Recover Gracefully)

You may be reading this and remembering some painful, cringy memories that result in lacking awareness – but we all do it. It’s awkward and embarrassing and maybe a little confusing sometimes, but if you happen to misread the moment, it’s okay.

It’s okay to let go of the old moments you remember when you didn’t know any better. We’ve all done cringy things – just don’t do them again.

If you want to talk about it, just stay humble and keep an open mind. If you need to, apologize and move on. Mistakes are just as much a part of learning as success itself.

Awareness and Connection

Reading the room isn’t about manipulation or control, it’s about being present and tuning in to the people you’re with. It’s about having respect for yourself and for others, and understanding that we all experience things differently.

When you can sense how other people are feeling, you can create more honest, grounded and peaceful interactions.

Being present with someone, with the intention of learning more about them – is the greatest gift you can give them in that moment. It’s a part of how real connection is made.
